Ich hab mich seit kurzem an unterstehendem Project beteiligt.
Weil ich nie so deutlich bin in meinen Schreibseln und mich oftmals selbst nicht versteh, dieses aber eine gute und wichtige Sache finde, habe ich den Schreiber gefragt ob ich seine Posting gebrauchen duerfe.
Mit positiver Antwort..
Vielleicht kann sich ja der eine oder andere dazu entschliessen.. also daher meine sonst nur *dem Herrn der Megapostings* vergoennte Laenge

Den meisten von Euch dürfte das Seti@Home Projekt (Suche nach außerirdishem Leben)
wohl bekannt sein. und viele werden sich wahrscheinlich auch daran beteiligen.
Ich will hier nicht über den Sinn oder Unsinn dieses Projektes diskutieren,
aber ich habe vor einiger Zeit ein anderes Projekt gefunden,
daß meiner Meinung nach mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdient.

Das PROJECT: Cancer Research

An diesem Projekt sind unter anderem folgende Organistionen beteiligt:

Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford
Molecular Catalogue Donors:
Asinex; ChemBridge, ComGenex,
Contact Services (now known in the USA as ChemDiv Inc.),
Maybridge , and Oxford Molecular's HTS Database
und nicht zu vergessen 941,245 Members.

Worum gehts dabei:

PROJECT: Cancer Research

One in four of us will at some time suffer from cancer. The high mortality rate, the suffering experienced by patients from the side effects of existing treatments, and the high costs of treatment all contribute to making cancer a priority for drug research.

A NEW WAY TO HELP
A landmark research project has begun that allows people to make a real difference in the fight against cancer.

The United Devices Cancer Research Project is asking you to volunteer your PC to help process molecular research being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.

IT'S SAFE & EASY
There is no cost to participate and no impact on your computer use. The project software cannot detect or transfer anything on your machine but project-specific information. It just allows your computer to screen molecules that may be developed into drugs to fight cancer. Each individual computer analyzes a few molecules and then sends the results back over the Internet for further research. This project is anticipated to be the largest computational chemistry project ever undertaken and represents a genuine hope to find a better way to fight cancer.

The computational power to perform research of this scale is only available through the generosity of individuals like you.

Die Client-Software wurde auch hier von United Devices, Inc. entwickelt.

Das Prinzip ist das gleiche wie bei Seti@Home:
Ich lade mir ein Programm auf meinen PC, das meine ungenutzte Rechen-Power (CPU-Leerlaufzeiten) für die Forschung einsetzt.
Wie auch bei Seti kann mann sich hier zu Teams zusammenschließen.

Wie bereits geschrieben laeuft dieses Project auch auf meinem Comp.
Ich kann alles genau wie vorher ausfuehren ohne irgendwelche Schnellheitseinbussen zu haben.

Ich hatte am Anfang noch folgende Fragen und post die mit Antwort mal dabei

Hier ein Auszug aus der member policy:

United Devices assures Members that applications will not damage their systems or invade their privacy in any way. Our agent runs unobtrusively in the computing background and is not invasive. It cannot detect or change any other files or material on Members machines. It can only update project-specific data in its own files.

United Devices Members will always be told what projects they are running. They also will have access to Web pages outlining which organizations are providing the project applications and explaining those projects. Members always have the option of opting out of a project.

Members will be able to control how much of their system resources are used by United Devices and will be given user preference options on a wide range of factors, including:

Whether the program runs as a screensaver or an application
When computation and communication can be done
Whether connections should be made automatically
Which proxies and firewall settings to use

To protect Member privacy, Members are asked to create a member name when they install the UD Agent. This member name is maintained in the Member profile and used to identify each member on the UD web site and on any scoreboards.


Da ich geneigt bin, dem zu glauben, sehe ich da keine Gefahr ausspioniert zu werden.

Der Datenverkehr hält sich in Grenzen.
Der UD-Agent ladet ein Datenpaket (weiß jetzt nicht genau wie groß aber kleiner als 1MB) auf deinen PC.
Danach wird dieses Paket verarbeitet, was im Schnitt 9-15 Stunden dauert.
Dann wird das Ergebnis (also nicht das ganze Datenpaket) zurück gesendet und das nächste Paket geholt.
Dürfte also auch bei Deiner Flat kaum ins Gewicht fallen.
